Does Sun Protective Clothing Work?

Living in the Sunshine State means plenty of fun in the sun, but it comes with some risks. Older Floridians have much higher rates of skin cancer, with Florida ranking second highest in the nation for new melanoma cases. Sun-protective clothing companies claim that their products can make a big difference in the number of damaging rays that reach your skin, but are they worth it?

What is UPF?

Sun-Protective clothing manufacturers use UPF to describe the level of protection provided by their specific clothing and accessory items. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation penetrates the fabric of an item. For example, a UPF of 30 allows 1/30th (about 3%) of available UV rays to pass through it. If a fabric allows less than 2% of UV rays through it is considered UPF 50.

Does Sun Protective Clothing Work?

Sun-protective clothing is manufactured from fabrics that have been proven to block the transmission of UV light. The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of sunscreen relates mostly to the amount of protection from UVB rays.  UVB (Ultraviolet B) rays have a shorter wavelength and are responsible for sunburns, DNA damage, and skin cancer. UVA (Ultraviolet A) rays penetrate the skin on a deeper level causing photoaging, wrinkles, and damage to the immune system.  Sun-protective clothing with a UPF of 30 or higher can provide your skin protection from both types of damaging UV rays.

How Do I Choose Sun Protective Clothing?

The minimum UPF required for a clothing item to be considered “sun-protective” is 15. However, a fabric must have a UPF of at least 30 to qualify for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Approval. When choosing sun-protective clothing, a UPF of 30-49 will give you adequate protection, but a UPF of 50+ is the most ideal. Darker fabrics with denser weaves will provide more protection, as well as clothing items made with polyester or nylon.

Protecting Your Home’s Interior from the Sun

Did you know that direct sunlight causes the color of carpets, rugs, and furniture to fade? It is important to understand how and why this happens so that you can begin to protect your investment and keep it looking its best for years to come.

How Does the Sun Damage Carpets and Furniture?

Although you can’t see it or feel it, carpet and furniture fabrics contain small amounts of water content in their fibers. When exposed to direct sunlight, the UV rays cause this water content to convert to hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide has a bleaching effect on these fibers, and they begin to fade over time. Lighter fibers can even start to appear yellow.

Damage to furniture and carpet can be costly for homeowners to replace. An obvious solution would be to place your furniture in areas of your home that don’t receive direct sunlight. This can be especially challenging in Florida, even more so if you enjoy the natural light and view of the outdoors in your space. That is why we recommend two quality products that protect your furniture and carpet while saving you money and protecting your skin from these same damaging UV rays.

SunSetter’s EasyShades Protect Your Home From UV Rays

EasyShades are a great way to protect your home’s carpeting and furnishings. These solar screens block 85% of the sun from outside your home. Not only will this protect your home, but it will also make your home more energy efficient. While Easyshades will keep your home cooler, protect your furniture, protect your skin, and provide privacy they will not block airflow or your view!

Retractable Awnings Reduce Solar Gain

Retractable awnings are another easy way to block 85% of the sun’s damaging UV rays. Retractable awnings can also reduce cooling costs, by preventing solar gain on your windows. Solar gain is the increase in temperature caused by solar radiation. Both Easyshades and retractable awnings can open and close with the touch of a button. They are also available in electric, mechanical, and solar models. Retractable awnings are especially appealing to homeowners who want to create an outdoor space that is comfortable for hosting, hobbies, and simply relaxing.
